Absorption Studies after Gastrojejunostomy with and without Vagotomy.

Of the various procedures used in the treatment of duodenal ulcer, subtotal gastrectomy has been studied most extensively from the point of view of resulting metabolic disturbance (Butler, 1961; Stammers and Williams, 1963). The alternative procedures, vagotomy combined with gastrojejunostomy, pyloroplasty, or antrectomy, are now coming under the same scrutiny, and it is hoped that the results ...

Pancreatic exocrine function after truncal and highly selective vagotomy.

We have measured plasma glucose and immunoreactive trypsin concentrations and serum pancreatic amylase activities in single blood samples following truncal vagotomy (TV) in 13 patients and highly selective vagotomy (HSV) in 14 patients. Our results show that an increased incidence of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency occurs postoperatively regardless of the type of vagotomy. Glucose concentrati...

Truncal vagotomy and drainage for chronic duodenal ulcer disease: a controlled trial.

The results of elective truncal vagotomy and drainage in 547 duodenal ulcer patients are reported. Altogether, 204 patients were randomly allocated to pyloroplasty and 200 to gastrojejunostomy. In 101 patients gastrojejunostomy was electively chosen and in 42 patients the duodenum was opened to confirm the diagnosis. Operative mortality was 0.5%, the incidence of proved recurrent ulceration 3.3...
